Stair Carpet Fitting in Peterborough: Everything You Need to Know
Stairs are one of the most used areas in any home — and one of the most challenging to carpet well. Whether you live in a Victorian terrace in the Fletton area, a 1970s semi in Bretton, or a modern new build in Hampton Hargate, choosing and fitting the right stair carpet makes a genuine difference to how your home looks, feels, and sounds.
At Cambridgeshire Carpets, we fit stair carpets across all PE and CB postcodes. This guide covers everything you need to know before making a decision.
Why Stair Carpet Matters More Than You Think
Staircases take far more punishment than any other carpeted surface in a home. Every trip up and down concentrates wear onto the front edge (the nosing) of each step. This is why choosing the right carpet type and fitting it correctly is critical — a poor choice will look tired and worn within a few years, while a well-specified installation can last a decade or more.
Beyond aesthetics, stair carpet also plays an important role in safety and acoustics. A properly fitted carpet with good grip reduces the risk of slipping on smooth treads, and it significantly reduces the noise of footfall — something that matters particularly in homes where children or pets are running up and down throughout the day.
What Type of Carpet Works Best on Stairs?
Not all carpets are suitable for stairs, and choosing the wrong one is one of the most common mistakes homeowners make. The key characteristics to look for are:
Pile type: A dense, low-pile carpet performs far better on stairs than a deep, plush pile. High-cut pile carpets look luxurious in a bedroom but will quickly show wear and can become unsafe on stairs as the pile flattens and shifts. Twist pile carpets — where the fibres are tightly twisted together — are the industry standard for stair use. They retain their appearance under heavy traffic and are available in an enormous range of colours and textures.
Fibre type: Wool and wool-blend carpets are the premium choice for stairs. Wool is naturally resilient, so it bounces back after compression and holds its appearance extremely well over time. Synthetic alternatives in polypropylene or nylon are a practical option at a lower price point — modern synthetic carpets have improved significantly in recent years and many perform very well in heavy-traffic areas.
Pile weight: For stair carpet, look for a pile weight of at least 35oz per square yard. Higher is better — a 40oz or 48oz carpet will noticeably outperform a lighter one in high-traffic use.
Fitting Methods: Waterfall vs. Wrapped
There are two main methods for fitting carpet on stairs, and each produces a different look.
Waterfall fitting brings the carpet straight down from the back of the tread and folds it over the nosing at 90 degrees before continuing down the riser. This is the faster method and uses slightly less carpet, making it more cost-effective. The result has a clean, modern look and is well-suited to contemporary interiors.
Wrapped fitting pulls the carpet tightly around the nosing of each step so it follows the curved profile of the tread edge. This is more labour-intensive and uses more carpet, but produces a neater, more tailored finish that wears better over time. Wrapped fitting is especially recommended for homes where the stairs will get heavy use, as the nosing is the highest-wear point and proper wrapping protects it far more effectively.
For most homes in Cambridgeshire, we recommend wrapped fitting — the additional cost is modest and the result is a more durable, smarter-looking installation.
Underlay for Stairs
Underlay on stairs serves two purposes: it protects the carpet backing from abrasion against the wooden tread beneath, and it adds cushioning underfoot. For stairs specifically, the underlay must be cut and fitted to each individual tread and riser — running a continuous sheet of underlay over stairs the way you would over a flat floor is incorrect and will cause the carpet to stretch and loosen over time.
Use a medium-density underlay for stairs rather than the thickest available — excessively thick underlay on a stair nosing can cause the carpet to feel unstable underfoot and may create a tripping hazard. A good quality foam or rubber underlay at around 8–10mm is the right balance of cushioning and stability.
Patterned Stair Carpets and Runners
Stair runners — a carpet that runs down the centre of the stair leaving the wooden sides exposed — have seen a significant revival in popularity and suit everything from traditional period properties to modern Scandi-influenced interiors. Runners are typically between 60cm and 80cm wide and are fitted using stair rods or by tucking and securing at each riser.
If you choose a patterned carpet for a full stair fit, pattern matching is essential. Misaligned patterns on a staircase are immediately obvious and will make even an expensive carpet look poorly fitted. Our team takes care with pattern repeat positioning during every install.
How Much Does Stair Carpet Fitting Cost in Peterborough?
For a typical 13-step straight staircase with landing, expect to pay in the region of £400–£800 supply and fitted for a good quality twist pile carpet. This covers the carpet itself, underlay, fitting, and gripper rods. Spiral or curved staircases, or properties with two flights, will sit at the higher end of the range.
